Pilings are very common in construction, especially when the soil is not sturdy enough to bear the weight of the load passing through it. Basically, piles are long cylinders that are pushed into the soil to support whatever is on top of it. They are made from strong materials, like steel or concrete, to make sure that they’re able to withstand the weight.

In the earlier days, they were even made of timber and were installed by hand. People had to literally dig with shovels to install long piles of wood, and then fill the gaps with sand and small rocks. Now, there are easier ways to do it, especially because most buildings require the use of pilings.

When there layers of soil are varied in strength
In some cases, the weak soil is closer to the surface while the stronger soil is underneath. The top layer of soil cannot support the weight of whatever will be on top of it. The pilings responsibility is to transfer the weight the load on top of it to the layer of soil that’s strong enough to with stand it.
The science behind is very similar to how a column functions. The heavy load bypasses the weaker layer and, instead, puts its weight on the heavier layer. That way it’s able to carry more weight without destroying the layer of weak soil on top.
When most of the soil is weak
Any construction requires a solid foundation to make sure that the building is will be able to endure years of exposure to the elements. If the soil where a particular building will stand is not sturdy enough, the usual remedy is to add a pile foundation. Most constructions would obviously prefer a property that does not require this, but there are many factors that contribute to determining that a particular land is unfit to build on without a piling. It’s just impractical to avoid.
If the soil all around the construction is weak and there’s no bottom layer that’s strong enough to withstand the load, then the weight has to be transferred across. That means that the pile itself helps support the load. That longer the pile, the more weight it’s able to bear. This is often the approach when a building is expected to have many floors to constantly be exposed to weight, like a water tank or a bridge.
